As difficult as life may be, even for those of us privileged enough to be reading this, it is worth remembering that its core, life is rooted in simple acts of kindness, generosity, and mirth. First and foremost, we were given these bodies, with which we get to see, hear, feel and play our way through this unfathomably majestic world. We were given minds through we we can learn, synthesize, and create entire cosmos’ worth of art, wisdom, and ingenuity. And, perhaps most importantly, we were given our hearts, these electrochemical radiant centers which pulse with the animating force of the universe. A force we call love.
As the moon conjoins the Sun in VIrgo tonight, and Mercury completes its final retrograde action until December tomorrow, we do well to recall the kindness that we came from, and the kindnesses that pull us forward towards our destinies each day. Virgo — or, as I prefer to call her, Virga — is the goddess of the ripened fruit, the bounty of late summer, the perfected one. But with that beauty comes the burden of precision, retention, and, sometimes, dissatisfaction with the inevitable messes we come upon in our lives. Today, let’s make a practice of seeing the angels in the details, the winged messengers in the slips of tongue and lisping feet as we tumble through this season of Pisces-inflected mudfloods. Let’s choose to see the best in people, starting with ourselves.
Mercury retrograde occurred in his signs of domicile this year: first in Gemini, now in Virgo. Rather than the typical hiccup and confusion, this starryteller has noted a confluence of inspiration, reflection, and communion when Hermes gets to relax in his rulership for an extended period. With the retrograde coming to a close and the Rx shadow commencing, contemplate what things you’ve left unsaid, texts you’ve left unsent, lists you’ve left unchecked. The wind of the world is at your back, and though Rome wasn’t built in a day, the Pyramids just might have been.
This Dark Moon occurs opposite retrograde Neptune in Pisces, trine to retrograde Pluto in Capricorn and Uranus in Taurus, and inconjunct the North and South nodes in Aries and Libra. In short, this means that the biggest themes of the year (and the decade) are brought towards the surface this week. In this context, there is such a thing as too much information: our nervous systems are not designed for the empathy overload that the constant disasters of nonstop news inspire. Instead, we owe it to our compatriots on planet to lean more into the things that we can change: the small kindnesses that make this world worth saving, preserving, and transforming for the better.
It’s often forgotten that Virga is mutable, focused as she is on perfection and ripeness and purity. But along with Gemini, Sag, and Pisces, she completes the axis. And it is a potent reminder that perfection itself requires a wholesale transmutation - from the seed into the fruit, from the caterpillar into the butterfly, from the dissonant into the consonant. Like Guan Yin and Avalokiteshvara, Virga looks on the perfect imperfections of the world with a radiant compassion, one that uplifts simply by witnessing. She brings order, clarity, and possibility. She is you, when you learn to love yourself more fully than ever before.
May you seek and find that love tonight, and welcome the transformation.
